Key Types of Cordless Batteries

Over the years, cordless power tool batteries have evolved, and three main types dominate the market:

1. Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd): This is an older technology. NiCd batteries are durable and can handle deep discharges, but they are heavier and suffer from a “memory effect” where their capacity can decrease if they are recharged before being fully drained. They are also considered less environmentally friendly due to the toxic cadmium they contain.
2. Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH): A step up from NiCd, NiMH batteries offer a higher energy density, meaning more power in a smaller, lighter package. They have a less pronounced memory effect but still self-discharge faster than modern batteries and are sensitive to temperature.
