• Modes: Most rotary hammers are multi-functional and come with three main modes:
  • Drill Mode: The tool acts like a regular drill for drilling into wood, metal, or plastic.
  • Rotary Hammer Mode: This is the primary function, combining both rotation and hammering to drill into concrete and masonry.
  • Hammer-Only Mode: The rotation is disengaged, turning the tool into a small jackhammer for chipping, chiseling, and light demolition tasks like removing tiles or concrete.
• Impact Energy (Joules): The power of a rotary hammer is measured in Joules (J). A higher Joule rating indicates a stronger impact and better performance in tough materials. Most models for general use have an impact energy of 1.5 to 5.0 Joules, while professional demolition hammers can go much higher.
• Chuck System (SDS): Rotary hammers use a special bit system called SDS (Slotted Drive System). These bits have grooves that lock into the chuck without a key, allowing the bit to slide back and forth freely to absorb the piston’s impact.
  • SDS-Plus: The most common type, used for light to medium-duty tasks.
